In great detail using PowerPoint slides and film, Will Muschamp covers every aspect of playing great secondary coverage. For example, he shares a "T" step that allows the defender to put his cleats into the ground and break on balls quickly. But first, a defender must understand the concept of being "in faze" with the receiver and the defensive back must learn how to be the receivers' eyes and hands when he is "out of faze." These are important concepts that Coach Muschamp covers.
Playing off of blocks is emphasized and Coach Muschamp shares a perimeter drill that teaches the defensive backs to attack the receiver and run through the ball carrier with the near leg and near shoulder. Four different drills are shown in his tackling progression before Coach Muschamp details the use of the Angle and Pad Tackling Drills.
Using game and practice footage, Coach Muschamp discusses the "Rip and Liz" calls used when defending 2-by-2 formations, as well as the importance of reading the number two receiver in the secondary. Next, he tells how to defend 3-by-1 sets using the "Skate" call.
